Little Hands Basket - 15 Instruments

A fabulous collection of 15 tactile musical instruments specially designed for Early Years settings. The instruments are all made from natural, sustainable materials and produce a very wide range of different sounds.

These are proper musical instruments, not plastic toys, and will delight and stimulate the youngest of young musicians and we think you will find them hard to resist too.

The collection comes with a 16 page Activity Guide, written for non-musicians and full of practical and creative musical activities for young children.

N.B. For SEN settings: Please put a note with your order to indicate that it is needed for an SEN setting, so that we know to include the relevant materials.

Early Years Musical Instruments & Music Kits

Please always remember that Sound Children and Drums for Schools Early Years products are musical instruments and NOT toys and should be used with young children only under the close supervision of responsible educationalists and carers. By following these simple guidelines you will ensure the childrens learning, development and enjoyment of playing music, as well as their safety.

  1. Bring the instruments out just for music sessions, and put them away afterwards (the children will love to help!). This keeps the instruments special and it avoids any risk of them being damaged in the course of unsupervised play, without your realising it.
  2.

  3. Make sure your music sessions take place on a soft surface, whether inside or out.
  4.

  5. By your own example encourage the children to treat the little instruments as we treat full size orchestral instruments - with sensitivity, gentleness and care.
  6.

  7. Never allow children to play with any instrument unless closely supervised and dont let any child suck or bite any part of any instrument.
  8.

  9. Dont let a child of any age play any musical instrument aggressively, especially close the ear, as we must take care to avoid any risk to their hearing.
  10.

  11. After each music session, wipe down the instruments with a damp cloth if theyre grubby (fine to use a mild disinfectant solution) and check for any loose parts (tug on any strings) or cracks. If in any doubt, remove a damaged instrument from use and contact us for further advice (sending us a photo is a good start).

What goes well with the Little Hands Basket - 15 Instruments

All of the instruments within the Little Hands Basket - 15 Instruments sound well played together, but it is also possible to have fun experimenting with different subsets of sounds.

Try starting a rhythm with one instrument and then add new rhythms on top, one by one. Or start by sorting the sounds into high, medium and low, or hard and soft. Question how else can you sort sounds - see the activity in the Activity Guide for inspiration!

After this, try combining sounds using instruments from within one group and compare this with combining sounds from each of the groups. There are so many possibilities and they all produce different results.

How the Little Hands Basket - 15 Instruments is made

All our instruments, and the baskets, are made in Bali using natural and local materials. Most are made to our designs in local villages where they create a useful source of income for families and a low stress, clean and safe type of work. The beautiful and sturdy baskets are woven by hand from bamboo fibres and are traditionally used by Balinese artists, musicians and dancers for carrying their costumes and materials.

How to look after the Little Hands Basket - 15 Instruments

None of the instruments need any special maintenance. Just be careful not to let the basket and contents get damp and do not put it on a radiator or anywhere too hot. The instruments are tough but they are still musical instruments and not toys and need to be treated with respect. Small children should of course be continuously supervised.
