More about the Egg Basket - 12 Eggs

There are a dozen eggs, of course, consisting of several different sizes which make subtly different sounds. This is such a good idea and everyone loves the aesthetic idea of collections of things, especially tactile ones!

This beautiful basket of eggs has proved enthralling for children and adults alike because they are so much more than just egg shakers. Children play them, arrange them, sort them, count them, give them out, collect them in, hide them, find them, role-play with them (mostly as chickens!), tell stories using them, roll them, place them and more. The discoveries and explorations are endless.

As well as all this, the engravings on the eggs (which have been designed by young children in a school in Bali) inspire questions, stories and comments. The eggs are also extremely 'danceable' meaning that children seem to want to move around while holding one in each hand. Children often like to take these eggs outside and move around or put them in their pockets. And, of course, children love to shake each one finding all the different sounds and ways of playing.

Good Practice Guide

Early Years Musical Instruments & Music Kits

Please always remember that Sound Children and Drums for Schools Early Years products are musical instruments and NOT toys and should be used with young children only under the close supervision of responsible educationalists and carers. By following these simple guidelines you will ensure the childrens learning, development and enjoyment of playing music, as well as their safety.

  1. Bring the instruments out just for music sessions, and put them away afterwards (the children will love to help!). This keeps the instruments special and it avoids any risk of them being damaged in the course of unsupervised play, without your realising it.
  2.

  3. Make sure your music sessions take place on a soft surface, whether inside or out.
  4.

  5. By your own example encourage the children to treat the little instruments as we treat full size orchestral instruments - with sensitivity, gentleness and care.
  6.

  7. Never allow children to play with any instrument unless closely supervised and dont let any child suck or bite any part of any instrument.
  8.

  9. Dont let a child of any age play any musical instrument aggressively, especially close the ear, as we must take care to avoid any risk to their hearing.
  10.

  11. After each music session, wipe down the instruments with a damp cloth if theyre grubby (fine to use a mild disinfectant solution) and check for any loose parts (tug on any strings) or cracks. If in any doubt, remove a damaged instrument from use and contact us for further advice (sending us a photo is a good start).

What goes well with the Egg Basket - 12 Eggs

Surprisingly, egg shakers go very well with drums which is why we have made a collection called Drums 'n' Eggs Kit. The egg shakers are a good consistent rhythmic instrument and drums can provide a solid beat for them. The sounds of the shakers can cut through most drum sounds.

Egg Basket - 12 Eggs will also go well with the Nursery Rhythm Kit - 15 instruments because that collection is mainly made up of 'hitting' instruments of different types.

If you want a larger variety of shakers to go with your Egg Basket - 12 Eggs, the Nursery Shaker Kit - 15 Instruments collection has several other types of Shakers which will go very well.

How the Egg Basket - 12 Eggs is made

All our instruments, and the baskets, are made in Bali using natural and local materials. Most are made to our designs in local villages where they create a useful source of income for families and a low stress, clean and safe type of work. The beautiful and sturdy baskets are woven by hand from bamboo fibres and are used by Balinese artists, musicians and dancers for carrying their costumes and materials.

How to look after the Egg Basket - 12 Eggs

Encourage children to retrieve, count and put all 12 eggs back into the basket together with the cards after using them - It will be less likely that you will lose or break any.

Watch out for any splits in the surfaces of the eggs especially if children have been quite physical with them or have dropped or thrown any.
